Wanna be a Graphic Artist? Make your own Custom Backgrounds for Tirnua!
November 22nd, 2009 by Tirnua Luc Leave a comment Share on FacebookJoelle has been making the backgrounds for the game, since they started to look good.
She kindly wrote a tutorial about the process, and is ready to have some of you make your own backgrounds to be added to the game.
The link to the tutorial on the wiki is here. It includes Blender files you can download as a starter kit.
This takes a lot more expertize than the regular custom content we have for clothes in the game, but it can have a bigger impact too. It is not that hard, it is really worth trying.
Good Luck,
Luc

OH SANIIIEL!
Lmao we need Saniel back around here to make us some backgrounds!
P.S.: Joelle, I love your work!
It’s all so pretty and well-done! Good job.

It’s very tempting, I have been meaning to do this for a while. Nice tutorial.
* Underlines it on the “to do” list *

Just do it already.

THANK YOU, GUYS…. SO MUCH!!!
…this is so cool… can not wait to see what Raisin comes up with… and everyone else…

The 6×10 download link on the wiki isn’t working for me…not that I need them all, I don’t really know what I need lol…just wanted to mention it.

There’s also no 20×24 (but no link to one either) although I haven’t checked what’s in them yet - maybe they’re just examples and not really needed to make one. But if they are needed a 20×24 would be cool to get.

Also, there is nothing when I click on the plant to add the object.
Which brings me to my first question…Can we only place 3D blender made objects into the background? I’m so lost, but hopefully not forever lol.

But then again, even in the text it only says you can make up to 12×20. Howcome? Any special reason 20×24 can’t be done by us?
The tutorial seems really detailed btw, people should try it even if you’re not a genius.
Blender can be difficult but that seems to be more or less a walkthrough. I’ll see if I can get through it with my limited knowledge

Yeah the link to the plant is broken too as Qute said

Hmm, tried to follow the tutorial now, and it’s very hard to follow - I think the downloads are messed up?
- For instance, the tutorial says to press F12 to render the image. If I render it, I get a black/grey image since there are no lights added.
- In the pictures in the tutorial there is a nice pic of the lights, but in the sample file - no lights added to the scene.
- The tutorial says we aren’t allowed to change lights. If I add “sun” I can see the render just fine.
- Are we supposed to add lights or sun ourselves? Or is there some other way to get the lights in there?
When I try to change the properties of the camera to see the 4 renders that will be used in the game, I don’t get the same result as the tutorial.
Also when I add the Flagstones it doesn’t angle as it should, it’s only like a background image and sort of “stands up”. How do I angle it so it “follows the ground”?
I’ve followed the tutorial exactly afaik.
I get the feeling that you need to be an expert to do this.
Could you upload sample files that have lights, and try follow the tutorial yourself on those specific files to see if it works?
Sure I may have missed something but there’s 2 of us doing the tutorial at the same time and he gets the same results as I do.
Would really like to be able to do this.
Has anyone else managed to follow the tutorial and get the same results as they do?
I’ll keep trying but some help would be appreciated.

that also happened to me, I assumed I did it wrong lol.
I had trouble following it as well, not sure if I will keep trying or not yet. We’ll see…because I really wanted to learn.
I started reading blender tutorials lol.

Come on you devs * bump bump * lol
There’s a swedish saying “If you give us a finger we want the whole hand” but I don’t mean anyone is giving anyone the finger here.
How about if Joelle and Saniel could host a background making class ingame where we could ask all our stupid questions?
You started us and now we refuse to stop.

I think I’m getting the hang of this so many buttons and kind of buggy program Blender. lol…
(It could be buggy to me and not anyone else, some things seem obviously bugged but whatever lol)
I’ve made it through to the add object part this morning. Many things raisin said are true for me too.
The lamp thing, I see no lamp listed in my outliner window. If I add sun, I can see the render, otherwise all I get is a black screen.
And the same problem with the flagstones picture, its flat on the screen instead of angled.
Do we need to adjust the picture or is this a bug?
Ok be back after I accomplish the next step. Thanks Joelle for your help, and the tutorial. I think my biggest problem is learning the actual program, not so much following the tutorial. I’ll get there.

Aha the plant link isn’t broken anymore!
November 25th, 2009 at 3:41 am
Aha! Raisin, have you switched from flat to cube on the map input panel of the shading section? It made the background look right…

I’ve been wanting to live on a little island in the middle of no where for awhile now…
So I decided to use my own images lol…I guess I should have thought about that before following the add object part because now my plant is just floating in the middle of the ocean…lol.
However…I did get it on there and that is a good thing! Step 2 complete.
Good thing the plant was there for us, otherwise I don’t know…I tried looking for blender fish premade but no luck. I am going to have to learn more about blender to really create backgrounds. Good thing I have a long holiday weekend!!!
